5 Tips to Improve your Memory

Wouldn't it be wonderful if you had photographic memory? Yes, it would be but, in reality, most of us do not have that gift. However, there are ways for us to improve our memory and here are 5 simple tips.

1. Pay undivided attention

Give undivided attention to what needs to be remembered. People tend to hear and not listen and process what is actually being said. If you merely hear what is said, you will naturally not remember. Even if you claim to be able to multitask, you will find yourself better able to remember things you solely focus on.

2. Group things together

Take your shopping list for example. You would not be able to remember you want to buy spinach, peanut butter, cabbage, lettuce and bread. But it would be a lot easier if you remembered you wanted to buy three types of greens plus bread and peanut butter for breakfast tomorrow.

3. Make use of mnemonics

One common mnemonic that all of us would have heard in primary school for remembering the colours of a rainbow would be "Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain" – each of the of the first letter of the phrase representing a colour namely, Red, Orange, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet. This could be employed to remember the three greens mentioned above. Cabbage, Spinach and Lettuce could be remembered with the mnemonic, "Complete Shopping List"!

4. Start imagining things

Stories are always much easier to remember as compared to cold hard facts thanks to association, visualisation and exaggeration. The more interesting and exaggerated your visualisation and associations are, the better you will be better to remember. What more fun way is there to remember things by?

5. Repeat 'til you remember

Why is it that your mother's nagging resonate in your ears despite your attempts to shut them out? Why is it that you remember your best friend's number so well? Because you call him or her so frequently. Repetition – yes, and nagging – works.
