When thrown into a whole new environment of strangers, it is hard to break ice with your new colleagues. How can you make the right first impression without seeming overfriendly? At the same time, how do you maintain your distance with colleagues that do not work with you directly without appearing snobbish? Here are some tips and tricks.
1. Begin with your immediate colleagues
Start with your immediate surroundings for that comes with a reason – it makes perfect sense to get to know people you are directly going to work with. You may get an idea from where you are seated, or who are to report to. Or even better, ask your direct supervisor for a better idea. It would also be a good time for you to quiz your predecessors on what would be expected of you so you do not fall short of expectations.
2. Volunteer to serve
In bigger companies such as MNCs, there are cross-functional teams that deal wit the welfare of the company staff on the whole such as for anniversaries or the annual dinner and dance. And it is in these teams that you get to network beyond your department or division. These ties are important be it for collaborations inter-department or inter-division in the future, or simply for a non-work lunch break! It is also good to learn how the company functions beyond your job scope.
3. Find a mentor
You could find a mentor, whether official or not. Besides hastening your learning process, a mentor can serve as a great help in connecting you with others in the company too. However, tread wisely in this matter. If you already have an official mentor, be sure to inform him or her that you will be having another mentor for this or that reason. Or, keep the other mentor a casual, friendly one.
Lastly, be patient. There's no point in being an eager beaver – you might turn some people off by appearing to be a social butterfly when you could be exerting those same efforts at your work instead. So, take your time!
