The following is a conversation about the effect Trump's presidency may cause on Singapore overheard at a coffee shop. The names have been changed to protect the conversationalists' identity but here's the gist of their conversation.
Lup Cheong: Oh Johnny. Come come. A toast. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! (lifts his beer mug)
Johnny: Sorry man. I'm just not in the mood.
Lup Cheong: Where's your holiday spirit man?!
Johnny: Sorry bro but you'd be feeling like I do if you'd been reading the news the last couple of weeks.
Lup Cheong: (pours 2 beers) I haven't. So come. Enlighten me and unburden yourself.
Johnny: Sigh. I can't help but worry about the state of the world thanks to the Americans electing Trump.
Lup Cheong: Aiyo, why are you so concerned about one orange man? He's so far away just bo chap him la.
Johnny: That's the problem. A lot of the things that he's shooting his mouth off on will have chilling implications on our region.
Lup Cheong: You mean the stuff on human rights? I thought our tjeng hu bo chaps human rights...
Johnny: No. His proposed human rights policies, though deplorable, will have a miniscule effect on us in Singapore. It's his foreign and trade policies that I'm worried about. Particularly his latest saber rattling on nuclear proliferation.
Lup Cheong: What did he say now?
Johnny: Wow you're really out of it. Here. Take a look. (points at his iphone)
Johnny: Don't you get it? America already has enough nukes to destroy the planet 5 times. Why the hell would he want more missiles?! But never mind that. Can't you see the domino effect words like these can have?
Lup Cheong: Nope. What does America's nuclear policy have anything to do with Singapore and South East Asia?
Lup Cheong: Vaguely.
Johnny: South Korea and Japan are already jittery over North Korea... Japan doubly so thanks to China's antics in the South China Sea. Both South Korea and Japan going nuclear could cause an arms race loop that could cause China think it ought to get more nuclear warheads if those two countries are getting some. Having more nukes isn't going to enhance peace within the Asian region. It's going to heighten tensions even more.
Lup Cheong: I see...
Johnny: Trump's attempted trolling of China over Taiwan, together with his nuclear bluster, is putting the world on the path towards war. We already gotta worry about China's increasing assertiveness, now we also have to deal with drama from America?! I don't know about you, but I don't want us to be drawn into another armed struggle between nations thanks to one man's ego. How can I have a Merry Christmas with all this looming in the back of my mind bro?
Lup Cheong: Well, we're still about a month away from his inauguration. No point worrying about possible scenarios now because we don't know what will happen once he moves into the white house. Hopefully the global community will rein Trump in by then.
Johnny: I hope so. But I'm not optimistic for 2017...
