Gnomeo & Juliet takes Shakespeare's classic tragedy and spins it into a humorous, fun cartoon that is bound to please audience of all ages.
In the gardens of neighbours Miss Montague (Julie Walters) and Mister Capulet (Richard Wilson) only separated by a fence are opposing camps of gnomes – identified only by their red and blue hats – that spring to life when night falls. True to the original Shakespearean plot, star-crossed lovers Gnomeo (James McAvoy) and Juliet (Emily Blunt) meet in a commando-style infiltration mission but quickly discover each other's identities. Will they end up happily ever after? Or will they suffer the same fates as their predecessors? That's for you to watch and find out!
Besides the two main leads is a truckload of hilarious sidekicks like dim-witted Fawn the deer (Ozzy Osbourne), lovesick flamingo (Jim Cummings), Terrafirmenator lawn mower (Hulk Hogan) and Nanette the frog (Scot Ashley Jensen), who plays Juliet's boy-crazy nanny. And replacing bloody fights are lawn mower races that bring to life the film's 3D element.
Adding on to the laughter and what would make even the adults crack in laughter are the numerous Shakespeare quotes and references are wittily scattered throughout the 80 minutes of Gnomeo & Juliet. The even older generation would be happy to hear various Elton John hits such as "Rocket Man", "Tiny Dancer" and "Crocodile Rock". Original tunes for the movie are also produced by the man himself.
With all these in mind, this delightful take on Shakespeare's classic will surely not meet with a tragedy at the box office, we say.
