Popular author of fantasy novel and movie Twilight Saga Stephenie Meyer returns with a sci-fi attempt The Host that looks set to be a winner too.
In the post-apocalyptic world of the future, Earth is invaded by aliens who take over the bodies of humans, effectively replacing their souls. A rare human Melanie (Saoirse Ronan) refuses to give in to its invader Wanderer and ends up sharing it instead. As the two share memories, they end up working together to save the rest of Melanie's loved ones including brother Jamie (Chandler Canterbury), uncle Jeb (William Hurt), Jared (Max Irons) and Ian (Jake Abel). A love triangle, or rather a square, ensues as the two falls for respective issued love interest.
Saoirse undergoes a significant makeover for her role in The Host and puts up a decent enough portrayal as a conflicted body without seeming schizophrenic. It is an unbalanced performance with the rest of the crew being somewhat stiff in their acting. Or maybe too immersed in their roles as invaded bodies.
The book stays close to the novel in form and even in some aspects of the details so, if you are a fan of the book, this is one rare movie adaptation you will be sure to love too.
