G.I. Joe: Retaliation is a follow-up of 2009’s G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra.
The G.I. Joe is a U.S. elite military unit comprising of special operatives. In this sequel, the Joes are framed by their very own government for crimes against America. The team is ambushed and terminated under the President’s orders, and the few surviving Joes hatch a plan to clear their names and prevent foes like Cobra and Zartan from blowing up the earth to kingdom come.
After their base was destroyed, the remaining Joes somehow managed to make it back to civilization where Roadblock (Dwayne Johnson), now the leader of the Joes, enlists the help of firearms-fanatic General Joe Colton (Bruce Willis). Together, they expose the President for the fraud that he is and saves the world from the tyranny of an evil dictator and his threat of total destruction.
The film is chock-full of mindless fighting scenes, limp quips, slap-stick humour and ludicrous plot developments.
Just don’t expect anything much from an action movie with characters named Roadblock, Snake Eyes, or Storm Shadow, and when the evil villain’s main goal is for world domination even if it means achieving his aim by dropping missiles in all the different continents. My question: What is there to rule if the entire world and everyone else on it is destroyed? Is he going to govern dust particles?
Furthermore, action movies are not Director Jon M. Chu's forte. Do not trust a director who directed the Step Up dance movies and Justin Bieber's concert film to skillfully direct an action film.
The only saving grace for this movie is that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and Bruce “Yippee-ki-yay motherf**ker” Willis, the 2 all-time favourite child-hood heroes are starring in it. And if you’re planning to watch it for the swoon-worthy Channing Tatum, don’t bother, he doesn’t make much of an appearance in this film.
If you're looking for a good action-packed movie that does not consist of ammature editing and a nonsensical storyline, save the money watching this overly convoluted movie and download Die Hard instead. But if you are indeed craving for a mind-numbing action film, you have just hit the jackpot!
