The much anticipated Marvel’s Iron Man 3 was released in Singapore cinemas just yesterday. In this third instalment, Tony Stark goes up against the elusive Mandarin, an incredibly intelligent villain whose crafty, diabolical schemes knows no bounds.
After a close friend gets critically injured in one of the Mandarin’s attacks, Stark, in a fit of anger, threatens the Mandarin over national TV to a duel. He gives out his home address for the Mandarin to locate him with promises that he will kill him, not a very smart move on his part.
The Mandarin follows up on Stark’s request and sends missiles to blow up Stark’s house. Stark narrowly escapes with his life, but finds himself desperate and desolate. He embarks on a quest that will test his very fortitude, and in turn discovers the answer to the question that has been secretly haunting him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?
The film superseded my expectations. Normally you would expect nothing much but mindless action and cheesy one-liners in a superhero movie, but this movie went far beyond being just a brilliant superhero film. The movie will amaze for its plot as much as for its intensity. You’ll find yourself constantly on the edge of your seat or laughing uproariously to one of Stark’s wisecracks.
Robert Downey Jr. delivered accordingly to his acting as Tony Stark, playing the sarcastic and glib-tongued "genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist". Gwyneth Paltrow oozed sex appeal and female power as Pepper Potts who is not by any means a damsel-in-distress in this film. Guy Pearce was perfectly cast as Aldrich Killian, and Ben Kingsley’s role as the Mandarin was nothing short of superb.
The movie dialogue flows very smoothly together and the characters are anything but run-of-the-mill, all the characters in the movie play a crucial role in the plot, not one, even the villains, are one-dimensional characters. The Mandarin’s character was by far the best, next to Stark’s. The Mandarin is not what he seems, and plays an interesting role that provides a very pleasant twist to the story.
Iron Man 3 is by far the best amongst the trilogy. The genius mix of the characters, dialogue and plot development all roll up to form one of the most impressive superhero comic book movies ever made.
The next superhero movie to be released has a lot to live up to.
