You can expect to see a whole new world of Disney’s classic animated movies as your favorite fairy tales are brought to life, giving the fantasy stories the illusion of reality on the big screen.
Tales almost as old as time such as Mulan, Snow White and The Little Mermaid are some of the few titles added to Disney’s growing list of live-action remakes. Some of the movies will be based on the original stories or sequels to existing live-action adaptation while others are given a complete upheaval.
1. Beauty and the Beast
Most of you are already aware of and excitedly anticipating the live-action Beauty and the Beast movie, set to be released in March 2017. Featuring the lovely Emma Watson as Belle, Luke Evans as Gaston, Ewan McGregor as the candelabra Lumiere, Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts, and Ian McKellen as the clock, Cogsworth. Beauty and the Beast will hit Singapore theaters 16 March 2017. Check out the official trailer here
, and the movie soundtrack sung by Ariana Grande and John Legend here
China’s legendary heroine is getting her own movie, with 3D ass-kicking. Disney bought a script in 2015 to bring Mulan to life and is fast-tracking the film which is expected to hit the cinemas in November 2018. Hollywood has the tendency of whitewashing movie characters, but thankfully Disney has dismissed the suggestion and is in search of a Chinese actress to play Mulan. The movie will follow the legend of a young woman who disguised herself as a man to take her elderly father’s place in war, and eventually ends up saving China.
3. The Lion King
Hakuna matata! Realistic lions and animals set in the African savannah crooning to songs from its original animated film? Yes please! The story follows young Simba who is cast out into the wilderness after his father, Mufasa, is killed by his power-hungry uncle Scar. It shows Simba coming into age and returning years later to reclaim his rightful spot as king of the jungle. Jon Favreau, who directed Iron Man and the live-action Jungle Book remake is given the nod to direct. There is currently no release date yet.
Dumbo, the cute and cuddly squishy elephant bullied because of his big ears is a positive story that helps kids realize that their differences are what makes them unique and special. We are not sure with the studio’s decision of selecting Tim Burton to direct the live-action remake of Dumbo. We are all familiar with Tim Burton’s dark and twisted movie style, and the bubbly and sweet nature of the Dumbo story paints a stark contrast. Disney is not using real elephants during shooting, they will use a mix of CGI and live action, a wise decision when Tim Burton is concerned. There is currently no release date yet.
5. The Sword in the Stone
The 1963 film, The Sword in the Stone, which follows a young King Arthur as a orphan and his lessons with the famous wizard Merlin is going to be given a remake written by Game of Thrones writer/producer, Bryan Cogman.
6. Prince Charming
Of course, we got to give the men some loving too. Disney is giving a prince from a popular fairytale his very own backstory. It is still unclear which Prince Charming will be awarded the screen time but fans are speculating that it could be either from Cinderella or Snow White.
7. The Genie
The witty genie from Aladdin, voiced by the talented late Robin Williams in the 1992 classic, is getting his own live-action film titled Genies. The movie shows how he wound up in the lamp that would eventually be found by Aladdin.
Yep, Aladdin will also be getting his own remake. Guy Ritchie is selected to direct. We can’t wait for the magic carpet ride and to catch a glimpse of the beautiful Princess Jasmine.
9. Cruella de Vil
PETA’s worst nightmare is the manifestation of Cruella de Vil. Interestingly, the inhumane villain portrayed as an ugly old hag in previous renditions of 101 Dalmatians, both animated and live-action, will be played by the enchanting Emma Stone this time round in Cruella, an origin story for the villain.
10. Winnie the Pooh
A live-action adaptation of Winnie the Pooh is alleged to feature Christopher Robin as an adult visiting his anthropomorphized animal friends in the Hundred-Acre-Wood.
11. Peter Pan
Peter Pan has had multiple live-action movie remakes, but Disney still has their sights set on remaking the 1953 animated film. David Lowry, who directed Pete’s Dragon, will be taking Peter Pan under his wing.
Everybody’s favorite sparkly fairy, Tinkerbell, will be getting her own live-action film, Tink. Although we have to frown upon the 40-year-old Reese Witherspoon being casted as Tinkerbell. Unless the movie follows Tinkerbell into her later years, it is of our opinion that Tinkerbell should be portrayed by a younger actress.
Now this is a story that we can definitely see Tim Burton directing what with its slightly creepy tones. Though a director has yet to be chosen, Peter Hedges, who wrote the script for The Good Dinosaur and The Odd Life of Timothy Green, is currently penning a feature loosely based on the original Pinocchio story about a marionette carved from wood that is brought to life and dreams of becoming a real boy.
14. The Jungle Book 2
With the success of the live-action remake of The Jungle Book, Jon Favreau is expected to make a return to the director’s chair for The Jungle Book 2.
15. Maleficent 2
Angelina Jolie is set to reprise her role as the Disney moves forward with a sequel to the live-action hit Maleficent.
16. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
The first animated Disney classic is Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. This makes it a monumental decision for the studio to go ahead with the decision of working on a live-action version. The fairy tale will include new songs, with songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who most recently wrote the lyrics for La La Land chosen to pen the new music.
17. Rose Red
Rose Red is Snow White’s lesser known sister who is featured in Grimm’s fairy tales. Disney is loosely adapting the character from the classic fairy tale book. The film will feature Rose Red’s adventure with the dwarves as they try to rescue Snow White after she eats the poisonous apple. Evan Daugherty is penning the script for the movie. She previously wrote the shitty film, Snow White and the Huntsman, starring the plain-looking, expressionless and stammering fool, Kristen Stewart as Snow White. So don’t expect too much out of this movie.
18. The Little Mermaid
Washing on our sunny shores soon will be The Little Mermaid live remake by Disney. Universal Studios is also working on one with new music from Lin-Manuel miranda and Alan Menken. So you can expect two very different movies of The Little Mermaid in the near future!
19. James and the Giant Peach
Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach originally published as a novella was adapted as a stop-motion film in 1996. Disney is apparently discussing about buying the right to make a live-action film out of the story.
20. Chip ‘n’ Dale
The two cheeky chipmunks are getting a CGI/live-action film based on the animated series – Chip ‘n’ Dale Rescue Rangers.
Disney greenlit a movie for one of its darkest characters – Chernabog – the demon closely resembling the devil from Fantasia. The character was featured in an 11-minute segment called Night on Bald Mountain. It is a weird choice for Disney especially since the satan-like creature’s ominous and dark nature does not tie in with Disney’s happy-go-lucky theme. Disney will be humanizing Chernabog, similar to what they did with Maleficent.
22. Mary Poppins
This upcoming film with be a sequel to the classic 1964 movie that included some animated components. Emily Blunt is picked to star as Mary Poppins alongside Lin-Manuel Miranda who will play Hamilton. Mary Poppins Returns will be released in December 2018.
