Basic Steps for a Better Complexion

Complexion is one aspect not to be taken lightly – a bad complexion immediately project tardiness and lack of care even if it is genetic. This could be detrimental to your career, especially for those in sales or the service line. Fortunately, there are ways you could make sure it is as free as could be from blemishes. Here's four basic skincare steps to take note of:

1. Cleansing

Though said to be the most important step in keeping your complexion clear, cleansing is an essential daily procedure but cleansers need not be expensive. And just as shampooing your hair too often deprives you of its natural nutrients, it is unwise to cleanse too often; cleansing more than twice a day might harm your complexion rather than help it. Nonetheless, it is essential that you remove your makeup with appropriate remover.

There are many choices in stores like Watsons and Guardian. However, one should be careful in selecting a cleanser suitable for their skin type – a creamy cleanser for dry skin and vice versa. For those with dry skin, look for cleansers with glycerin. Likewise, for those with oily skin, cleansers that contains salicylic acid could be considered. And as for those with sensitive skin, go for milder cleansers with propylene glycol.

2. Exfoliating

The process of exfoliation – removing dead skin cells, excess oil and impurities – on a weekly or fortnightly basis will do wonders to rejuvenate your complexion. Tools like a clean cloth dampened with warm water or exfoliating gloves, such as from Body Shop, could be used. Just make sure you wash them thoroughly after use.

One common DIY way is through scrubbing to clear dead cells from the surface, rather than allowing them to build up, and hence giving your complexion a refreshing glow. It is advisable for one to go for scrubs with smaller microbeads rather than the big ones, especially if you have sensitive skin.

More costly ways would either be chemical peeling or using Retinoids such as Renova or Retin-A. For that, you have to seek professional help such as from the National Skincare Centre or recommended clinics.

3. Moisturising

After cleaning up, it's now time to stock up on the nutrients and avoid the formation of fine lines due to dry skin. There are two kinds of moisturisers: Occlusive moisturisers that store up moisture and humectant moisturisers, which draws moisture from surrounding air. There is no way to find out which type is better for you except to try them out or consult a professional.

That said, moisturisers should be used by all while being careful not to overdose and by starting with mild products, but those with severe acne problems should always check with their doctors.

4. Protection

Protection from the harmful effects of UV rays, and more importantly, those persistent freckles and wrinkles is an essential part of a good skin care routine. Sunscreen should at least have a SPF rating of 15 and above to protect your skin from damage. One should take care to reapply every few hours, especially if you have to work under hot sun.

It is also crucial that we have our beauty sleep, smile more and avoid unnecessary stress, on top of the above four tips. Neglecting your skin might not show now but it surely will years down the road. So, do take care and adopt a proper basic daily routine to maintain a fresh complexion now!
