Dogs frolic about freely in pure doggy bliss here with tongues lolling and eyes bright with excitement as their owners dine on delicious wholesome meals and sip on beverages in peace. Ah B Cafe is every dog's safe sanctuary for socializing and every dog owner's dream cafe.
People naturally assume that pet-friendly cafes only serve mediocre food, and this generalization is justified as most of the pet-friendly cafes I have eaten at did not impress me. The only reason why I checked them out is so that I could bring along my beloved Pomeranian, Sugar, who is extremely attached to me. The feeling is mutual.
Ah B Cafe however, breaks the mold, as the chef has a fiery passion for both pets and food (not interlinked). She welcomes all kinds of pets – dogs, cats, hamsters, rabbits, birds and etc to the establishment, occasionally stepping out of the kitchen to coo over them.
Each dish she creates is given a lot of careful deliberation before it is included in the ever-expanding menu. The chef endeavors to cook wholesome, delicious grub for the human compadres that she herself will enjoy eating. With each conceived dish, she takes into consideration the time owners spend fussing over their pets, and creates the dish in a certain manner so that it will retain heat for a long time even after it is served. No MSG is used in any dishes, and surprisingly very little salt is used too as the chef has a allergy to the bleaching component used to process salt. Therefore you can be certain that all flavors are au naturale.
The cafe is situated in a large compound, called Sunny Heights, right outside The Grandstand on Turf Club Road. If you are driving, make a right turn into a seemingly small road just before the entrance to the crazily big open-air carpark of The Grandstand. You will be able to the Sunny Heights sign. The compound has free parking within with lots of other tenants offering various pet services such as boarding, grooming and even swimming.
Ah B Cafe is situated within a fenced up area with an outdoor area for dogs to freely roam about. Indoors, the cafe is air-conditioned, clean and cozy with warm wood furnishings and flooring.
Scallop Pasta, $25.80
This light and tantalizing pasta dish is given just a bit of a kick to appeal to Singaporeans’ tastebuds with the inclusion of chili oil. It has a similar flavor to aglio olio with bigger taste and aroma. The pasta is cooked perfectly al dente which complements the texture of the tender yet springy pan-fried scallops topped with parmesan cheese and a dollop of caviar. These scallops are imported from Japan, picked for its naturally sweet flavor and succulent nature thanks to the cold waters they were cultivated in. They are lightly sautéed to highlight its delicately sweet flavor. These are expensive scallops and yet, the pasta is served with five huge and plump ones. The caviar gives a juicy pop of the flavors of the sea to the pasta.
Smoked Duck Steak, $18.80
Glistening in its own fat and juices, this duck steak is thinly sliced up and seductively served spreadeagled against a pile of fluffy mash potatoes. The duck morsels are extremely tender and succulent, each bite into a slice releasing a burst of savory duck juices. The lemony herb sauce by the side goes along extremely well with the duck, the refreshing, zesty flavors piquing the tastebuds.
Fish & Chips Garden, $18.80
Expertly curled around a piece of lettuce, this has got to be one of the cutest and most creative ways of presenting a classic plate of fish & chips. Dory fish is hand-dipped in a light batter, coated with breadcrumbs and deep-fried to golden-brown perfection with a crisp and flaky crust, while the fish within is fleshy and moist. The fries have a nice crust with a fluffy potato interior. It is safe to feed a few fries to your dog as it is unsalted. This dish is served with the quintessential tartar sauce in a little ramekin.
Ah B Cafe also has a menu for dogs, cooked fresh from scratch upon ordering, unlike other pet-friendly cafes that simply reheat frozen pre-cooked dishes, the latter is not ideal as not only does the food lose most of its nutrients, it ends up dry and almost inedible. Sugar did not get the opportunity to try Ah B's doggy menu the previous time we visited, but we will certainly do so the next time round.
