Enter the pet-friendly cafe where the sun still shines even through the night from the radiant smiles of people and dogs alike.
Sun Ray Cafe is a little bistro located within the landed housing estate in Serangoon Gardens where the area is split into two sections, a spacious section for diners who would like to interact with pets and a smaller section for patrons who do not want to come into contact with the furry babies.
Regardless of whether you are an animal lover or not, there is no denying that there is some really delicious grub to be discovered here, and it is the perfect place to chill out and unwind at any time of the day.
Sun Ray Cafe specializes in home brewed coffees, specialty teas, baked breads, and bread spreads. The menu also consists of brunch items with the usual suspects like Eggs Benny and Big Brekkie, small bites to quench a peckish appetite like Truffle Fries and Escargots, hearty mains like burgers, pastas and various meats and decadent desserts to finish the meal on a sweet note.
The cafe offers the option of dining right beside your pup as well. Check out the doggo menu which serves a variety of freshly cooked food from simple boiled minced meat, plain rice and treats to “gourmet” dishes that are very lovingly and aesthetically constructed.
White Blossom Teapot, $7
Choose from any of the 10 varieties of specialty teas available and select a brewing technique, ranging from cups to teapots to full-blown siphons, to get the best out of your tea drinking experience. The white blossom tea which I ordered arrived on a tray with a teapot filled with hot water that had been lightly infused with some white blossoms, served with a teacup of dried white blossoms by the side, an empty teacup, and an hourglass timer. To properly enjoy your tea, dunk the blossoms or tea leaves into the hot water, cover it to steep and turn over the hourglass. Once the last grain of sand has dropped to the bottom, your tea is ready to be enjoyed. The white blossom tea has a sweet, calming and musky aroma with rich woody amber notes and fruity undertones.
Level Up Cayenne Chicken, $15
The chicken is slathered with a delicious cayenne paste that gives just the right amount of kick to perk up the tastebuds and grilled so that some parts of it is lightly charred, concentrating the intensity of its flavors and incorporating a sultry smokiness to the dish. It is so tender and succulent that it secretes its juices all over the plate as you cut into it and the meat bursts with its glorious liquefied fat in your mouth.
Baked Salmon, $20
The baked salmon is served with the top layer encrusted with either parsley bread crumbs or cheesy bread crumbs. The parsley gives a refreshing evergreen flavor contrast to the rich flavors of the salmon. However, the salmon was baked too long for our liking, and came out a tad dry on that day. The cherry tomato salsa managed to salvage it though and imparted its fruity juiciness where the salmon lacked in moisture. There is an option to add risotto for an extra $3, which we suggest you do because the fish by itself may not be enough to satiate an appetite.
Sirloin Steak (180 gm), $23
A 180 gram slab of Australia free range grass fed beef is grilled, cut up, and layered with pineapple slices into a glorious meat tower. We requested for our beef to be done medium-rare, and as you can see from the cross-section of the beef, the chef has perfected the art of cooking steaks to the diner's preference, a skill that shockingly, not a lot of chefs have the consistency for. The steak is outlined with a thick layer of sinful fat that has just melted slightly from the heat of the grill and disintegrates into rich, beefy goodness upon touching your tongue. The steak is tender and succulent, yielding secretions of juices as you chew into it. The red wine sauce further intensifies the rich beefy flavors, while the caramelized pineapple slices give the dish a sweet and zesty juxtaposition.
Hazelnut Praline in Dark Chocolate Bowl, $8
We were pleasantly surprised with the quality and culinary finesse of this dessert considering that Sun Ray Cafe is a humble neighborhood cafe. This is an artisanal dessert we would expect a fine-dining restaurant to serve. A smooth and hollow dark chocolate sphere is neatly cut into half and constructed to form a bowl filled with a heaping pile of hazelnut praline. The hazelnut praline is rich, creamy and velvety with a nutty and subtle woody flavor from the hazelnuts emulsified into the cream. While it is rich and creamy, it is ironically also light and fluffy. The dark chocolate bowl and scattered nuts add a firm and crunchy texture to the soft buttery praline, and the berries top off the dessert with an invigorating fruitiness.
Homemade Cream Cheese Salmon Roll, $12
My dog, Sugar, is probably the choosiest dog in the entire world. She NEVER eats by her own, and expects to be hand fed for everything. The only food that she will ever eat on her own accord is pan-fried foie gras which I give to her in paltry amounts during special occasions. So when she took several bites from this plate, it was a stamp of approval for Sun Ray Cafe's doggy dishes. This consists of 150 grams of Salmon mixed with cream cheese and served on a bed of sweet potatoes and vegetables.
