Coney Island – The Perfect Addition to the Waterway Park

Coney Island

If you have never taken a walk or a ride along the Punggol Waterway Park, you now have another reason to do so – Coney Island!

Closed to the public for a long time, since the late 1990s, Coney Island was finally opened again last Sunday, 11 October.

And there is much to cheer, especially for those who love cycling along the 8.4km Waterway Park – they now have a destination of natural beauty to head towards!

Coney Island

Coney Island, which is also known as Serangoon Island, is located in the Northeastern part of Singapore, and is separated from the mainland by the Serangoon River.

But no worries, two linkages – at both ends of the island - have been built so that the public can walk or cycle there. The western link leads to the Punggol Promenade while the eastern one to Pasir Ris Coast Industrial Park 6.

When news emerged in 2014 that the island would be opened this year, some were worried that the authorities might destroy most of the natural surroundings of the island, and little would be left of how the island has always been – rustic and rugged.

Well, thankfully, those fears are not realised. In fact, the authorities are to be commended for only doing the very minimal and necessary improvements – such as installing public toilets, a few scattered shelters for explorers to the island to hide from the elements when necessary, and the very thoughtful promenade which allows visitors a great view of the open sea.

Other than these, the island is very much left to itself, unspoilt, with its natural foliage, and lush greenery, and the varieties of (migratory) birds and even otters.

And oh, yes, there is also a lone cow on the island.

There are five beaches on the island, but except for the main one, the rest are nothing to shout about, although they are still worth visiting.

If you visit on the weekends, you can expect bigger crowds of people. So, if you want some peace and quiet to explore the island or to just chill out under the shades there, try and find time during the weekdays to visit Coney Island.

It is well worth it – the tranquillity, peace and quiet are quite precious indeed.

But do note that there is no lighting on the island – no lamp posts or such. So, if you are hanging out till late, do make your own provisions. But the gates close at 7pm. So, get out by then!

Here are also some survival tips if you are visiting the island:
1. Be careful when going to the beach. Some parts of it have sandflies which can leave you with a nasty experience. So, bring repellants!
2. Bring lots of water with you. There are no shops or stalls or water coolers there.
3. If you have children, do keep them close to you – especially if you are at the promenade by the sea. The last two steps there can be slippery.
4. If you plan to walk from one gate to the other, do note that the distance between them is 2.4km. So, if you have children or elderly folks with you, do take this into consideration.

And finally, Nparks provides guided tours at specifics times on different days. You can view the timetable here.

All in all, the opening of Coney Island is a much welcome feature to enhance the quality of life of Singaporeans, particularly those who live in Punggol and Sengkang.

Residents who have been enjoying the beautiful Waterway Park the last few years now have another awesome getaway to explore.

We should thank all those who have been working hard to make all this possible – Nparks especially, and all the foreign and manual workers who have toiled under the unforgiving Singapore weather (including the haze) to make our lives a little better.

Here are some photos for you to enjoy – and do make a trip to the island!
