If you are sitting in the office right now and wishing for a short getaway where you could set aside your troubles and party with wild abandon, we urge you to apply for leave immediately because Bangkok & Asia's biggest Songkran music festival, S₂O, is returning on 13 – 15 April 2016!
This multi-million dollar outdoor festival held in the heart of Bangkok at party central Show DC Oasis Arena is big, bad, wet and wild, boasting insanely elaborate stage setups with hypnotic visual effects and an impressive line-up of renowned international DJs such as Afrojack, Nicky Romero, Deorro, MAKJ, Apster, D-Wayne, Oliver Rosa, Quintino, Ravitez, Soda, Tony Junior, Vinai, Wolf Pack and YVES V.
The main stage itself is extraordinarily wide and 20 meters high, decorated as gigantic water towers with glittering LED lights for visual impact, fitted with a superb sound system. High pressure hoses will be mounted in front and on top of the stage so that water splashes can cover the entire wet zone and it won't leave you high and dry.
Massive towers will be erected at the wet zone illuminating the area with bright neon lights and continously spraying streams of water all over the party crowd while specially custom-made drones will be flying overhead shooting water. There will even be a special 3D water projection show brought by Heineken which will wow revellers with projected images against a backdrop of cascading water, creating a myriad of illusions.
Last year’s four-day S₂O festival attracted a total of 34,00 people. Of whom, 20 per cent were revellers from Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Korea and Indonesia. This year, organiser Woody World is anticipating a spike of some 36,000 fun-seekers over three days, with 12,000 on each night. A quarter of ticket sales are from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, Korea and China.
This year’s festival line-up packs a punch compared to last year’s. S₂O 2015 main draw were Deadmau5 and Afrojack. This time round, S₂O 2016 Day 1 will see American superstar DJs Deorro and MAKJ’s first ever festival show in Thailand. Day 2 is headlined by Nicky Romero (NL), alongside VINAI (IT) and YVES V (BE). Day 3, which is the finale of S₂O, will see Dutch DJ Afrojack present his curated programme – JACKED – for the first time in Thailand on April 15 (5pm–midnight).
With S₂O being a no-holds-barred music cum water festival, you are advised to wear clothes of light fabric like t-shirts, bermudas, shorts taking note if the color or fabric of your tee would become see through when wet. For ladies, I would suggest wearing a bikini or any other swimsuit underneath your clothes and the men should wear boardshorts. Do take note that every part of you will get drenched so leave your fancy heels and dress shoes at home and don on flip flops. Water fights will be breaking out all the time as well so leave your valuables and jewellery back in the hotel and keep your cameras, handphones, cash and cards in waterproof bags. And lastly, bring along a water gun so that you could fight back when someone shoots a jet of water in your face.
You will stick out like a sore thumb and be deemed a party pooper if you bring along an umbrella or put on a poncho, and will most likely be the biggest water target ever. Party revellers who prefer staying dry can proceed to designated areas outside the main water splashing area to party or relax without getting their hair wet.
Naturally with all the dancing and jumping going on, you will start to feel a little bit peckish. Even though you may be wet, you definitely won't be hungry as there will dozens of Bangkok's best food trucks and hawker stalls stationed on the festival grounds, serving a variety of cuisines from popular Thai dishes and snacks to American comfort food with prices just starting from US$1 (35 THB).
