The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle

The_Wind-Up_Bird_ChronicleBased on one of famous Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami's earlier works, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle is a play adaptation by Stephen Earnhart and Greg Pierce.

The author, more recently mentioned for the movie adaptation of his book Norwegian Wood, often explores themes of love, loneliness, realism and enigmatic characters. This is the case in The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle too.

The main character is Toru Okada, who loses his cat and then his wife, Kumiko. As he struggles to deal with his loss, he meets and interacts with a bunch of strange characters including a phone-sex caller, a suicidal teen, and a sadistic politician among others.

The play that took seven long years of production has won great praises at the Edinburgh International Festival 2011. Murakami also has requested for the makers to "not try to please me" but instead to create something of their own. Will he make it? Watch this to find out!
