The road to success is a long and grueling one, but with much perseverance and belief in yourself, you can actually soar to formidable heights. Just ask these celebrities who made their dreams come true by courageously getting over their rough childhoods and tediously carving their way into the industry.
1. Jim Carrey
One of Hollywood's favorite funny man who always seems to be full of smiles and hare-brained ideas once grew up in poverty. When he was a kid, his entire family lived out of a Volkswagen camper (van) parked right outside the factory where his parents worked. Also, his learning disability, dyslexia, caused him to get poor grades in school. He discovered though, that he had a talent at making people laugh, so with the encouragement of his school teacher, he would put on comedy skits and plays at the end of class for his fellow classmates. Before he got his big break, Carrey hopped around from one low-paying job to the next. He was even homeless at a point in time but managed to dig himself out of his rut and used his hard times and set-backs to motivate himself to try even harder.
2. Leonardo DiCaprio
Almost the entire world fell for Leonardo DiCaprio when he played the charming but penniless Jack Dawson in Titanic. However before that, when he moved out to Hollywood to pursue his acting career, the city did not embrace him with as much passion as they would later on in the future. Before he landed a good role, he fell into poverty and resorted to hanging around with some shady characters and criminals. It seems like all that trouble paid off in the end though, especially when Leo's net worth is estimated to be around $200 million.
3. Mark Wahlberg
Mark Wahlberg used to be a punk. He grew up in a notorious neighborhood in South Boston and got influenced by bad company which drove him to drop out of school, and that is not even the worse of it. In his youth, he has gotten into trouble with the Boston Police Department 20 – 25 times. By 13 years-old, he was hooked onto cocaine and other drugs, and he has engaged in fights with people of different ethnicity multiple times, once he even gorged out a Vietnamese man's eyeball with a meathook! He decided to turn his life around after spending some time incarcerated for his crimes. So prison does work after all for some people! Today, Mark Wahlberg is worth approximately $165 million.
4. JK Rowling
Before storming the entire world with her literary masterpiece that is the Harry Potter series, JK Rowling was a struggling writer and a single parent. Life was tough for her living off government grants, but she continued to to hang in and even manged to find time to write what will go down in history to be one of the best fantasy series ever. As a result, she's estimated to have a net worth of $1 billion. This is the epitome of a rags to riches story.
5. Oprah Winfrey
With a current net worth of a whooping $2.7 billion, Oprah practically invented the word “success”. She grew up in poverty on a small farm in Mississippi with her grandmother and single mother. Oprah was also sexually assaulted by a relative at the tender age of 9-years-old. Despite everything that she went through, she got up on her feet and went on to become the modern day media mogul and celebrity.
6. Arnold Schwarzenegger
Before he became the Terminator and then Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger was a poor immigrant from Austria who came over to the land of opportunity. He had to beg and borrow money to start his first business, Pumping Bricks, which he used to finance his body building career, and the rest is history.
He might seem like the luckiest guy on Earth, being married to sexbomb Beyoncé, but the rapper-turned-entrepreneur started life in the Marcy Housing Project in Brooklyn where he described it as a dangerous place to live, with high crime rates and prevalence of crack cocaine. As a teenager, Jay-Z got involved in a life of crime but woke up eventually and became one of the most richest and successful celebrities in the world.
8. Celine Dion
Celine Dion's life was not a bed of roses. She grew up as one of 14 children in her French-Canadian family. That's a lot of sibling rivalry! Obviously, her parents struggled to provide for the huge family when she was young. She has since come a long way and is now a five time Grammy award winning singer with an estimated net worth of $400 million.
9. Halle Berry
Halle Berry's father left them when she was just 4-years-old and her mother very bravely brought both her and her older sister up on her own. When she got older, she took a leap of faith and moved to New York City to pursue her acting ambitions, during her time there, she ran out of money and had to live in a homeless shelter. Things began to pick up for her when she got cast in a TV show and because she hung in there and never gave up, her career subsequently took off.
10. Tom Cruise
Look past the off-center front teeth and you see a very successful movie star whom practically everyone knows. However, this big Hollywood star did not have an easy start to life. When he was younger, he used to live in terror of his abusive father. Like Jim Carrey, he also had dyslexia and had extreme trouble reading, but he worked hard at it and managed to overcome it. Today, Tom Cruise and his movies are household names and he has a net worth of around $270 million. But even so, Tom Cruise has never let his fame get to his, off the big screen, he is every bit the hero which you can read about here
