Pastor Lesego Daniel, of Rabboni Centre Ministries, has a highly unusual way of spreading the word of God. He told his congregation that in order for them to be closer to God, they should eat grass. For added effect, the pastor also tramples on the churchgoers when they are prostrated.
The pastor believes that humans can eat anything they choose to sustain themselves. However, when he post photos of his congregation grazing on grass on the church's Facebook page
, he received a lot of backlash for it from thousands of people all around the world. Rabboni Centre Ministries is now a trending topic on social media sites, but Pastor Daniel's followers are unfazed. They strongly defend him and swear by his bizarre methods.
21-year-old law student, Rosemary Phetha, claimed that the grass instantly cured a persistent sore throat that had lasted for over a year. “Yes, we eat grass and we’re proud of it because it demonstrates that, with God’s power, we can do anything,” she said.
A more “miraculous” story belongs to that of 27-year-old Doreen Kgatha who alleged that the grazing did wonders for her. Apparently she suffered a stroke two years ago. “I could not walk but soon after eating the grass, as the pastor had ordered, I started gaining strength and an hour later I could walk again,” she said.
These testimonies from Pastor Daniel's followers failed to sway Facebook users' opinions on his methods. There are hundreds of furious comments left on the photos showing the churchgoers stuffing fistfuls of grass into their mouths.
“This is disgraceful,” Godfrey Albertyn commented angrily. “You should be ashamed to call yourself a pastor! You're making God and His followers look like idiots!”
Another facebook user, Thomas Hindkær, said that “its just sad to see these stupid and evil churches.. africa wake up.. these pastors are just exploiting you.. stop this nonsense..you need economic development not people telling you to eat grass.. damm this is stupid..”
David K Carr said: “They have crossed the line of sanity to stupidity. All we can do is pray.”
The pastor paid no heed to the online criticisms being dished out in the hundreds. He managed to convince his congregation to ingest grass by telling them that Jesus’ disciples also did new things that seemed unusual at the time.
“There were many disciples and you don’t know others,” he said. “Let God show you as they were deliberately not revealed in the Bible because God wanted someone to do them, new things. Nathanael was a disciple, yet there is no book of Nathanael, what about the miracles, signs and wonders, what about how they who were not mentioned, taught.”
Humans do not have the digestive system of cattle which enables them to properly digest grass. So it was not surprising to see multiple photos in which the parishioners were clutching at their stomachs in pain and throwing up buckets of undigested grass. To which it was captioned: “As the man of God prayed and declaring fasting, many were touched and their bodies responding to the Word of God.”
Apparently, encouraging his congregation to graze is not the only shenanigan he's got them doing. According to a Times Live report, during a service of at least 1,000 people in a marquee, he screamed “sleep”. Six people obeyed his command. He then ordered other congregants to slap and trample upon the sleeping people. The six of them remained completely unresponsive until he told them to wake up.
“You can leave them like this for six months, I love this,” he said. “I don’t want to be bored. You can even make police go to sleep when they come to arrest you.” In the past, he has also attempted to heal a woman from a demonic pregnancy.
There are many other photos uploaded in the church's Facebook page which shows him callously walking on people lying on the ground.
Nomveliso Viola Mbanga posed a question on one of these such photos asking “Why is he stepping on people? This is inhumane. Shocking.”
“Is this really what Jesus would do mare.....people come on really.......Jesus walked on water and not on people......” Refilwe Maimane pointed out.
The church is located in Setlogelo, Ga-Rankuwa, a township north of Pretoria. It was established in 2002 by Pastor Daniel, who “listened to the word of God and started the ministry.”
