We all love reading heartwarming stories, and this is probably one of the most touching true-life stories we have come across in a very long time. It all began seven years ago when a man in China, Xiong Jianguo, was scavenging through a rubbish bin and found something more dear than any precious metals or gemstones – a tiny baby girl! As soon as he laid eyes on her, he knew that his whole life as he knew it then would change forever. He decided to raise her as his own child and gave her everything he possibly could. The 50-year-old man now lives under a bridge in Nanchang City with his 7-year-old adopted daughter, Yanyan.
“I guess she was one of those children that was born to a family who didn’t want a girl,” said Xiong. “I had lifted the top of the rubbish bin and was looking to see if there are any plastic bottles I could sell to recycle, when I heard a baby. She was in a box in a blanket and I was absolutely stunned.” The box, apparently, contained a single note: “Was born on October 15, 2007.”
Xiong quickly bundled the baby up and took her back to his tiny one-room apartment which he lived at the time with his wife. The couple bought baby necessities that included a milk bottle to feed her, and that was when Xiong made up his mind to take care of her for as long as he could.
“No matter how hard it is, I intend to make sure that I raise her until she is old enough to stand on her own two feet. I don’t believe she would have had a good life in an orphanage,” he said.
Life has never been good to Xiong; his parents died when he was a young boy, forcing him to give up his education which only lasted till the third grade (8years old). His wife subsequently left him in 2012, and the house where they lived was demolished as well. With no other options left, he moved to a spot under a bridge with Yanyan. Yet in spite of everything he has gone through, he doesn't intend to give up on his adopted daughter.
Xiong does worry that without a proper roof over their heads, Yanyan will not have much of a chance to attend school. He is barely literate himself, but is doing the best he can to teach her to read, write and do basic math along with the help of a few other homeless friends. Yanyan is a fast and eager learner, she can apparently recite poems and sagas which greatly entertains their neighbors under the bridge.
“She is really bright, she learns very quickly,” Xiong stated proudly.
Even though life on the streets is tough and full of adversity, Xiong says that Yanyan has never once complained. They barely manage to make ends make and often, there isn't even enough food to eat. Once, a reported who visited her noticed that she has mosquito bites all over her skin. And previously at age four, she fell critically ill, but recovered quickly and has been healthy ever since.
The resilient little girl is heart-warmingly positive at such a tender age in the way she perceives her life.
“Whatever happens, every year on my birthday, which is the day he found me, I get a small cake and a trip to a photo studio so that my picture can be taken when I get my birthday present, and so I can have a memory of the day,” she said. “As long as it is my father’s place, I’m home.”
Yanyan is not officially adopted by Xiong because he does not meet the required conditions for adoption. The police cannot handle their accounts and even the Nanchang City Civil Affairs Bureau has not been of much help in their predicament.
Currently, the loving father and the precocious daughter have developed a special life and system of their own. In the daytime, they earn a livelihood by recycling, and by night, they study books under the streetlights. Xiong hopes that one day, Yanyan will have a steady job and become indispensable in society. I think I say this for the most of us that we are strongly rooting for the father-and-daughter duo.
