Sometimes even wild animals need their playtime. Coyotes are well known to be cunning and vicious animals that are notorious of snatching up small dogs to satisfy their hunger pangs, but a photographer found out that despite all their shortcomings, they can be quite lovable when they are not on the hunt for food.

One morning Pamela Underhill Karez spotted this wild coyote in her yard in a rural area in upstate New York.

“[He] picked it up then proceeded to toss it up in the air and play with it, just like a dog would toss a toy around,” she told Mother Nature Network. “It lasted perhaps five to 10 minutes, from picking up the toy, tossing it in the air, picking it up again and almost bucking around with it … then he just casually trotted off with it.“

Karaz also said that this was not the first time that toys had disappeared from her yard, and that she suspected that this coyote might have taken other toys as well. “This was such a wonderful reminder that all animals, the wild and the not so wild (our pets) are really not so different. They have personalities, they have feelings, and they do their best to survive in what is sometimes a very unfriendly world. They are not so very different than us.“

“Even wild coyotes need and like to play as do all the animals in the animal kingdom.”

Karaz spotted this handsome Coyote all alone in her backyard.

The Coyote's curiousity was piqued by an object lying in the yard and made his way over to where Karaz's golden retriever had left her toy.

“He smelled it, cautiously picked it up then proceeded to play with it, tossing it high into the air, throwing it around and very obviously thoroughly enjoying the experience.”

It is fortunate that the photographer had a camera on her and managed to snap these amazing shots of the rare moment.

“He didn’t pick it up to see if it came to life, it didn’t smell of being an animal. It only had the saliva from our dogs on it and perhaps that had the scent of fun.”

Karaz suspects that the playful Coyote has been over more than once to play with her dog's toys.

Eventually, the Coyote picked up the toy and happily brought it back to the woods where it probably shared the toy with its friends.
